Liposuction 101

Liposuction is considered medical treatment used for body resculpting by removing fat tissue, and in so doing, improve cellulite conditions. Depending on the area being treated and the amount of fatty tissue being removed, this treatment may be done under a local or general anaesthetic. A cannula, a small hollow tube like apparatus, is inserted through small incisions and manipulated under the skin to remove the fat tissue with suction.

There are different methods of liposuction used. Some involve injecting a fluid containing an anaesthetic, like Lidocaine, and something to contract blood vessels and minimize bruising like epinephrine. The solution used helps to free fat cells and facilitates their removal. Liposuction is not a replacement for dieting and exercise, it is most effective for relatively fit patients that have certain areas with a predisposition to fat storage and cellulite. There are many important things to consider with liposuction. It must be done by a well-trained practitioner, as the cannula must be manipulated to remove the fatty tissue in a manner that leaves the skin smooth and even afterwards, not dimpled and uneven.

Anticoagulants must be avoided before the treatment. It is recommended to avoid smoking for at least two months prior to the procedure. Post care may involve wearing tension garments for 4 to 6 weeks, which will depend on the area treated and how extensive the treatment was. Ideally after healing completely the area will be smooth, even in texture and color and there will only be the small scar where the incision(s) used to insert the cannula was. Liposuction can give great results but it is not a quick fix and will involve a financial and time commitment to enjoy the results.

Yoga - The Yin and Yang of Beauty

Yoga offers so many benefits it is no wonder it is sweeping the globe. It balances the body's system, improves vitality, relieves stress and tension, brings more oxygen to the body, controls hormone levels, increases sluggish digestion, flushes out toxins, offers a new level of mental alertness, and improves circulation leading to the reduction in wrinkle formation and producing a natural face lift. Long story short, yoga offers a healthy, more youthful way of living.

Yoga has the ability to correct the problem, and in doing so, create a more youthful and harmonious balance. It is said, "if you want to change your appearance, you must first change your thoughts, emotions, and habits where stress and aging originate." A stressed out body and mind will project the same in our appearances. Conversely, if we nourish ourselves by adopting a healthy lifestyle, we will age ever so gracefully. So, what are you waiting for? O-m-m-m-m . . .

Spas and the Swine Flu

"Considering what is going on with the recent outbreak of the swine flu, is it safe to keep my appointment at my local Spa, or should I rebook?"

It is a valid question. The Swine Flu, or H1N1, has certainly heightened health awareness. The truth of it is, the hygienic practices discussed in the media should be a part of our daily routine, not just when there is an epidemic, or potential pandemic. These kind of health matters are definite concerns of the Spa you visit, if you are in the right place of business. Spa management and their staff members are trained to provide a safe and sanitary haven to their clients. You may notice extra precautions such as gloves, masks, and stricter rules for employees (and clients) who must stay home if they are ill. Obviously, vigilant sterilization and hand washing play a key role.

Passing any type of infection is definitely not good for business. Plain and simple. If you are nervous about it, (and who would blame you), ask your Skin Care Specialist to address your concerns and inform you as to what they are doing for extra precautions. We are certain they will welcome your questions. If they don't . . . you need to look for another Spa.

Is Cellulite Genetic?

Cellulite is not directly linked to genetics, but it is affected by things that are influenced by our genetic make-up. Metabolic rates, hormone levels, the amount of adipose (fat) tissue, and where one tends to have thicker layers of fat cells. These things may make a body more prone to cellulite.

We know that women are designed to store more fat tissue than men to facilitate the needed energy for reproduction. As a result, cellulite is much more prevalent in women. Lucky us! In fact, very few men experience cellulite. It was designed that way to ensure women have the needed energy for reproduction. Many very fit individuals still deal with cellulite in certain areas, but the cardinal rule here is, . . . the healthier you are, the less cellulite you will have.

Babor Body Line Thermal Refining Cellulite Treatment

This light, fresh, cool emulsion (between a gel and a cream) provides some key actives in the battle against cellulite and facilitates their quick absorption into the skin. Caffeine is one of the key ingredients in this product. It is specifically directed to trigger the elimination of fats and the break down of triglycerides in the fat cells to fatty acids so they can be can be discarded.

The plant extract, Centella Asiatica, helps to restructure the dermal fibers that have constricted causing the tension and dimples in the skin. The constriction of these fibers also causes a disruption in the circulation, the fat cells to cluster, fluid retention, and poor elimination. The Horse Chestnut is a great decongestant that promotes the health of the blood vessels and elimination of wastes, along with camphor to boost circulation. The algae used to promote detoxification and provide essential minerals will improve the health and functioning of the fat cells and the supporting structures. There are also peptides to ensure cellular communication, hyaluronic acid for hydration, and even a little lactic acid (an AHA) to ensure the surface of the skin is exfoliating properly and has an even texture.

This is definitely a product that will give you great results if you use it properly and are a little patient. Use it at least once a day for 6 to 8 weeks, then you will be convinced. Oh . . . and maybe ease up on the pizza and go for water instead of that carbonated drink.

Sothys Total Resculpting Serum

Velvety smooth skin anyone? Loaded with plant extracts to put the fat cells on a diet, this serum promotes elimination from the cells thanks to the caffeine and the polyphenols of Boldo, Prunella and Celosia. These plant polyphenols, along with L-carnitine (an amino acid naturally found in the skin), inhibit the fat cells from storing triglycerides blocking the formation of more cellulite. The complex of Vitamin B3 and Vitamin E improves the microcirculation facilitating the elimination from the fat cells and drainage from the stagnant surrounding tissues.

It is important when treating cellulite to help improve the structure of the connective tissue surrounding the fat cell. This improves circulation, elimination and minimizes (or eliminates) the “dimples” in the skin caused by the challenged fibers. Sothys has used Centella Asiatica, known for its influence on stimulating collagen and elastin, to take care of this task.

This product has a light cream/gel texture and is applied like a body lotion. For best results it is recommended to use the serum twice a day on the areas of concern. Like all products designed to attack cellulite, the results are improved with exfoliation, dry brushing and stimulating the circulation giving better absorption of the product.

PHYTOMER Unique Anti-Cellulite Cream

This active cellulite cream contains an interesting combination of ingredients to combat cellulite. Caffeine and two mineral rich algaes, Laminara Digitata and Palmaria Palmata, are utilized because of their tremendous action on eliminating fats. The iodine found in the Laminara Digitata triggers metabolism and elimination, and is complemented by mineral ions that help to flush the tissues, prevent fluid retention, and improve circulation.

A brown algae (Halopteris Scoparia) incorporated in this formula has shown to have an interesting influence on cells that have not matured to active fat cells. This influence can inhibit the maturation into active fat cells and help slow down fat storage. These are great ingredients to have in the battle against cellulite. The sweet almond, sunflower, jojoba and soya oils promote penetration of the active ingredients, provide emolliency, and are rich with anti-oxidants to ensure the health of the tissues.

As with all cellulite products, apply daily for at least 6 weeks before you will see results. Use a light massage technique when applying the product until it has penetrated, and then knead the area of concern to promote the circulation that will help break up the constricted fibers and clusters of fat. This process will enhance your results. Weekly exfoliation, drinking more water and adding a little cardio will help speed up your results.

The Scoop on Cellulite Treatments

Cellulite spa treatments are very effective, but are not a 'one visit' cure. Exfoliation and algae wraps, or treatments using light therapy, infrared, micro currents, and/or kneading the tissues will be offered as a series of treatments given one to three times a week for a few weeks. These treatments offer incredible results but are somewhat of a financial investment, so be sure to change your diet and commit to a little cardio exercise during the treatments . . . you will get far better results in less time.

Many home care products deserve serious consideration, whether they are used to compliment and enhance a spa treatment, or used on their own. The ingredients found in these products are focused on stimulating the elimination of fats as well as slowing down the formation of fat. They also address drainage to promote elimination of wastes and excess fluids. Many cellulite products will create a heat sensation and may turn the skin quite pink, usually as a result of some form of niacin. Caffeine is another common ingredient in formulations because it penetrates well and stimulates the elimination of excess fats. Most products will recommend application twice a day following some type of stimulation like dry brushing, exfoliation, or even a brisk drying with your towel after a shower, as this stimulates the circulation and will lead to better utilization of the ingredients and better results.

The Cellulite Blues

Dimples on your cheeks might be cute, but not when they are on your thighs. The dreaded cellulite. Winter's secret and Spring's revelation. As the temperatures rise, so do our hemlines. Spring is the season to undrape our bodies and deal with the sins of winter. T'is the season for short sleeves, short skirts, short shorts, and when things really warm up, bathing suits.

Did you know that cellulite is more common in women than men? It is believed that estrogen makes women more prone to developing cellulite whether fit, firm, slim, or carrying a few extra pounds. Cellulite does not discriminate. We know it develops in stages. During the early stages it can only be seen if the skin in the area is pinched slightly to show the dimples. It progresses to a visible orange peel texture. If not cared for it will continue until it presents you with a cottage cheese appearance that others can easily see from across the patio.

There are many ways to deal with this unsightly condition. Of course, healthy living, drinking loads of water, eating fresh vegetables (especially those that are diuretic) and fish does wonders. Avoid the obvious, fried foods, carbonated drinks (including carbonated water), too much red meat, and alcohol. Don't get stuck singing the cellulite blues. Break out those cute little summer outfits and stay tuned . . . help is near.

Elemis Pro-Collagen Oxygenating Night Cream

This lovely textured night cream focuses on boosting oxygen in the skin, which then triggers the cells to detoxify and regenerate. Oxygen is essential to keep the cellular activity functioning well. This ensures healthy, younger looking skin and minimizes free radical damage. It is important that an oxygenating product not just provide oxygen on the skin (i.e. some contain hydrogen peroxide) as this can actually promote free radical development.

Elemis has created a combination of extracts from marine algae, which not only promotes the utilization of oxygen, but brings benefits of various minerals and vitamins needed for healthy functioning skin. These algae also ensure hydration to the tissues and provide calcium for collagen regeneration and cellular communication. The jojoba, shea butter, sesame, avocado and wheat germ extracts offer the EFA (essential fatty acid) benefits to ensure cell health and free radical defense, as well as incredible emolliency.

This cream is an exceptional anti-age tool as it does more than address the oxygenation for the skin and minimize free radical damages, it also contains some of those incredible peptides that facilitate collagen and elastin regeneration. Give your skin a month (time for cellular turnover), and it will show you a new vitalized healthier younger looking skin.

High-Potency Serum by Cellex-C

Cellex-C High-Potency Serum is a perfect switch-up product to introduce to your new Spring skin care program. It packs a Vitamin C power punch that boosts the activities in the skin while helping minimize and repair the damage caused by ultra-violet rays.

This serum is loaded with L-ascorbic acid, a form of vitamin C that is quickly used by the skin. It is no secret that Vitamin C plays a major role as a powerful anti-oxidant and in collagen regeneration. This product needs to be used for a few weeks before any changes in the skin will be noticed. First time users will need to increase the use of hydrating products for the first week as it may have a drying effect on the skin. It contains some hyaluronic acid to help keep the hydration levels up in the skin, but for many it is not enough to keep things moisturized until the skin adjusts to the active Vitamin C.

Like other serums, it is applied to clean skin, allowed to penetrate, and then followed with a nourishing cream. Spring is the perfect season to begin using the High-Potency serum so your skin can begin to build up resistance to the damage those glorious ummer rays can cause. The longer this serum is used, the better the skin’s resistance will be.

Spring Skin Care "Switch-Up"

Oh, the glory of Spring. It is the time of an awakening, a time dedicated to restoration, rejeuvenation, and revitalization. The air changes, the sun comes out and moods are lifted. As our bodies are unveiled from the wraps of the winter's cold air, it becomes evident that our skin requires a much needed boost of vitality.

During the Spring we take in more fresh air, are more apt to take walks, or go bicycling, while thoroughly enjoying the new season and its new life all around us. In a word, renewal. It is the perfect time to "switch-up" to a new skin care program that will awaken our skin with new ingredients and textures that will jump start cell activity to coincide with nature's shining moments.

Spring is a perfect time to add detoxifying products and treatments to kick things into gear and increase the elimination of toxins and cell regeneration. While dehydration is still and issue, day creams with a lighter texture may offer vitality boosters to give your skin that fresh spring glow. Don't forget to incorporate a detoxifying mask to your daily routine. A great vitamin enriched night cream loaded with anti-oxidants is a good bet. As far as treatments are concerned, now is a great time to book a detoxifying body wrap, an oxygenating facial or a lymphatic drainage treatment (face and body).

Stay tuned . . . product reviews to follow.
