TOP SPA TRENDS FOR 2012

Science based Skin Care
Scientifically, skin care ingredients are moving ahead as fast as medicine and medications, and often the science overlaps. Millions of dollars, if not billions, are being spent on research and development for intelligent ingredients. The goal is not to replace skin components, but to make the skin repair, regenerate and detoxify itself more efficiently, in other words, function more like a young skin than a tired, mature one. For example, we cannot replace collagen, but we can trigger the fibroblasts to make collagen. We can also slow down the function of the enzymes that degrade our natural collagen. The science is becoming so specific that some key peptides can trigger the DNA to repair itself quicker, even before more damage occurs. This is great news because as we age DNA gets slower at repairing itself and the more damaged it becomes the less likely the cells will regenerate. Science is working hard at discovering the mechanics of time, and in some cases, erasing it. This may be the key for those who are counting on skin care science to restore a more youthful presence.

HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR - YEAR OF THE DRAGON

The Year of the Dragon is generally fueled by excitement and intensity. The Chinese New Year of 2012 is the Year of the Water Dragon (thankfully), where the water influence exerts a calming influence putting out the usual 'fire' the dragon breathes. Water Dragons are charismatic and are much better leaders. It is a good year for starting a new business or project.

Famous 'Dragon' celebrities are John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Al Pacino and Matt Dillon.

TOP SPA TRENDS FOR 2012

SOUND, MUSIC, LIGHTS, COLOR, MEDITATION
Instead of being an add-on, music, lights, color and sound are becoming a focal point of spa treatments and services in an attempt to offer a full relaxation experience. SpaFinder states that, "one of the most high-concept, mind-melting, sense-blending spa experiences comes from Viennese artist, sha, whose award-winning “AlphaSphere” (at spas like Berlin’s Mandala Hotel ONO Spa or Bulgaria’s Kempinski Hotel’s Zalez spa), encases spa-goers in blue light, sound and vibrations, while their bodies sway to the rhythms of their own breathing. His new “WOLKE 7 CLOUD 9” is designed as a pure “ritual of the senses.” A spa-goer reclines in a canopied, warm cradle-pod and experience image and color “clouds,” featuring incredible cloud scenery and color transitions based on the real sky. Immersive sound “clouds” are formed out of the rhythms of the swinging cradle and the user’s own breathing, creating the three-dimensional “music,” all while soft vibrations caress the entire body. The result? “An all-encompassing body/mind effect that begins to work almost immediately.” Sounds perfect.

TOP SPA TRENDS FOR 2012

SOCIAL GAMING
Spas and fitness companies are paying attention to the social gaming industry and some are participating in engaging and educating their potential clients and overall audience. Clarins has launched Spa Life, a virtual spa experience where those playing the game learn how to run an actual spa. Created by Freshplanet, gamers learn how to book clients, manage the spa and services, and build a business . . . virtually. One of the popular features that keeps players coming back is the fact that credits can be earned in the game and redeemed in the purchase of actual products. The other attractive feature of the game is that Spa Life is "lightly branded" meaning those playing the game don't have to put up with too much marketing of products while enjoying the aspects of the experience. Game on.

TOP SPA TRENDS FOR 2012

FIRE AND ICE
Some spa treatments are hot . . . and some are not. Fire and ice. Treatments that use heat help spa-goers relax, sweat and begin the process of detoxifying. Treatments include hot rock therapy, saunas, and steam rooms. Treatments that use cold, help spa-goers experience less pain while the "coldness" works to reduce inflammation. Many destination spas are including ice rooms, snow ball fights, and igloos.

TOP SPA TRENDS FOR 2012

HAPPY FEET
A foot massage and pedicure is truly a beautiful thing. Let's face it . . . our feet take a pounding day in and day out, and continue to carry us throughout each and every day. They work hard at serving us well, and yet they are one of the most neglected areas of our bodies. Sore feet from too much standing, walking, running, working out, and unfortunately, ill fitting shoes. Our feet are often victims of the latest fashion trends and high heels that are simply too high, too narrow or too pointed. They are called "killer heels" for a very good reason.

This year spas and medi-spas are zeroing in on healthy feet and are offering a luxurious menu of spa treatments and medi-treatments to pamper our feet and remind them of how grateful we are for their dutiful service.
