Top Spa Trends for 2011

ASIAN INFLUENCES - HERE AND THERE
SpaFinder states that, "Asia has had a profound impact on the spa industry: Yoga, Thai massage, Ayurvedic medicine and acupuncture are staples on many spa menus, and the “Zen” nature of Asian design can be seen in spas worldwide. But historically, it’s been a tale of the mass exportation of Asian spa influences. Now a powerful new story is unfolding: The explosive growth of hotel/spa development within Asia (a market of 4.1 billion people), especially within the two fastest-growing world economies, China and India. These markets and others are developing at a breakneck pace, unleashing extraordinary new class mobility and massive opportunities for hotel/spa development. Stay tuned as the new “Spa Road” runs from China to India and beyond, and hotel/spa developers look to please both tourists seeking authentic ambiance and indigenous treatments and local spa-goers looking for Western-style spa-going."

Top Spa Trends for 2011

BABY BOOMERS STILL RULE
According to SpaFinder, baby boomers continue to be the "fastest-growing demographic in the world . . . in the US alone, 39 million consumers account for nearly $2 trillion in annual spending." With those numbers in mind, spas are catering to the needs of the boomers by offering exercise physiologists, chiropractors, orthopedic professionals and naturopaths to pay attention to keeping fit and dealing with issues of joint pain and rejuvenation.

Who said the boomers are an aging generation? Quite the contrary. The boomers will spend whatever they need to stay young spiritually, mentally, and physically . . . and the spas know it.

Beauty Gone Wild - "The Story of Cosmetics" Video

Did you know that the words like 'herbal', 'natural' and 'organic' have no real legal definition? Consequently, anyone can manufacture and promote a line of cosmetics and call it 'natural' or 'organic'. "The Story of Cosmetics" video is sourced from the Coming Clean Campaign (Campaigning for Organic Integrity) and is worth taking the time to watch, after which, you can then make up your own mind as to what products you choose to use. Choose safe and healthy. Support honest labelling. Educate yourself on green chemistry. Learn to read labels. Stay tuned . . .

Beauty Gone Wild - Hydroquinone

Hydroquinone is used in skin care to temporarily lighten pigmentations such as freckles, pregnancy mask and age spots by inhibiting the process that leads to discoloration. In the United States, the FDA estimates there are 65 companies selling more than 200 products containing hydroquinone in an array of over-the-counter products (up to 2% strength) and prescriptions (up to 4%). The most common preparation is a 3% topical solution that is generally applied twice a day on non irritated skin (eye and mouth areas must be avoided).

Hydroquinone has been shrouded in controversy since 2001 when it was banned in Europe following clinical tests showing it was the cause of leukemia in mice when used in large doses for a long period of time. Japan, Australia and Canada followed suit. The U.S. has proposed a ban, or at the very least, the FDA is pushing for stronger regulations and physician's prescriptions. Currently, there is a four month grace period while the new proposed regulations are being discussed. For now, if you live in the U.S., you have a choice as to whether to use it, or not. It is a time to do your homework and make a wise personal decision.

Cautionary Info:
Exposure to ultra violet rays will trigger repigmentation of the bleached areas. It is always recommended to avoid UV exposure and wear sun protection. It is not recommended if you have allergies to sulfites. There can be side effects, or allergic reactions, such as a rash, erythema (redness), swelling, blistering, drying of the skin, cracking or peeling of the skin, even shortness of breath. In rare cases Onchronosis can develop, which is a blue black darkening and thickening of the skin. There has also been some evidence of abnormal adrenal functioning and high mercury levels in individuals using topical hydroquinone as well as some research has shown it to be a carcinogen.

The good news? There are so many other options to lightening pigmentation that are effective without the side effects or aggression of this compound. Some may take a little longer to show results, but there is no question they are much safer.

Stay tuned . . .

Beauty Gone Wild - The EU vs The FDA

The European Union (EU) in Europe and the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in the United States are the two agencies responsible for examining and ensuring the safety of products that reach the consumer. The FDA is set up to protect consumers from products, drugs, medical devices, cosmetics and dietary supplements that are deemed unsafe or ineffective. The European Union "establishes safety, health and environmental protocols" for its citizens. A CE mark on a European product indicates that a product is certified and has met the EU's safety standards.

Europe has always been the leader in the beauty industry. That said, they have stricter laws and regulations on the safety of product ingredients (and procedures) that pose a potential risk of toxicity, and as a result, have banished more beauty products than the U.S. The latest statistics show the FDA has restricted the use of approximately 10 ingredients. What does this tell us? Stay tuned while we explore the world of beauty gone wild.

Micro Current Facial Lifts

As we get older, changes appear in our skin and our muscle structure as well. Exercise helps the skeletal muscles of our body stay healthy and firm, but what about the muscles of the face? If it were exercise alone, you would think with all of the talking, facial expressions, and chewing our faces would be toned. Instead we start to see the cheek muscles soften causing the nasolabial folds to deepen, the eyebrows seem to be a little lower, the lip line weakens, and there is a vertical wrinkle, or two, between the eyebrows. What is a good non-invasive treatment to consider?

It is well documented that electro-stimulation can be very effective. As we get older the receptors that cause muscle contractions become less responsive to nerve stimulation causing the muscles to become too relaxed, or too constricted. This micro-current apparatus does not exercise the muscles, but instead re-educates the muscles to regain good tone and respond more efficiently to the natural currents of nerve stimulation. Micro-current treatments can offer great results without any surgery or down time. It is also very effective when used as a maintenance routine for facelifts. Remember, not even surgery offers permanent results, . . . the aging process carries on. What can you expect? A visible change should be noticed after one treatment, usually the contour of the jaw is more defined, the eyebrows are raised, the lines soften around the eye, the lip line is higher, as are the cheeks. To enhance the initial result and have lasting results, these treatments are recommended in a series of 2 or 3 times per week for 12 treatments, followed by a maintenance treatment every 4 to 6 weeks. The completion of a series has the potential to shave off 10 years.

Each treatment takes approximately one hour, is completely relaxing, entirely pain free, and presents no risk factors. Costs vary, but a package of treatments will generally run on average $1200, give or take. The costs also greatly depend on the condition of your skin at the beginning of the treatments and on how well you treat your skin on a daily basis. Highly recommended.

Dysport - The New Botox

Dysport (Medicis) is the new alternative to Botox (Allergan). In fact, Dysport is made from the same botulinum toxin as Botox. FDA clearance was recently granted to Medicis, famous for their two great dermal fillers, Restylane and Perlane. Dysport is said to be "faster acting" with a greater "spread" giving a more natural appearance and requiring fewer injections. Dysport has the ability to last up to a few months longer than Botox since it contains less protein which is more difficult for the body to break down. Botox, on the other hand, is recommended for a smaller, more specific localized area.

The downside? A big one. A human one. As always it is terribly important to select the right professionals with the proper credentials. Since the injections go deeper and the botulinum has a paralytic effect, there is a critical need for precision to avoid the potential that the drug may spread to nearby muscles and cause unwanted side effects in neighboring areas. The professionals who administer these injections really need to know their stuff. Make no mistake . . . there is no room for error.

Dysport (Medicis) vs Botox (Allergan) is going to be an interesting boxing match to watch. It is aptly being described as," the biggest feud since the Hatfields and the McCoys." Well said.

Vampire Lift Video Clip

The vampire trend has certainly caused a stir, bleeding over into the world of plastic surgery. The Vampire Lift's popularity is greatly due to the fact the procedure uses something from your own body reducing the likelihood of allergic reactions and negative reactions.

Liquid Face Lift

Can the signs of aging be erased with a needle instead of a surgical knife? Yes, in fact there are quite a few procedures to choose from. One procedure is called the Liquid Face Lift. The facial filler Juvederm has three different formulations, Juvederm, Juvederm Ultra, Juvederm Ultra Plus. A creative mix of these three gels are injected at varying depths to instantly fill space, plump, and smooth the facial features to create a more youthful shape. Juvederm can fill in the lines around the eyes and under eye area while softening the contours downward toward the cheek. Injections will add definition to the cheekbones, plump up the nasolabial folds and replace volume. The lines above the lips can be gently filled in and add volume to the area. Juvederm will add definition to the jawline and deal with sagging skin by adding much needed volume. The entire procedure takes approximately 30 minutes. Bruising is to be expected to last for approximately seven days. The great part? No incisions. The cost? Approximately $2,200 to $6,000 and will last for a year or so.

Mesotherapy Facial Treatment

A large percentage of those seeking a more youthful appearance are making very different choices when it comes to plastic surgery. The data clearly shows a very definite move away from invasive procedures and toward non-invasive (or minimally invasive) cosmetic enhancements. Dermal fillers and Botox are largely responsible for this trend.

Enter Mesotherapy. Europeans have popularized injectable Mesotherapy treatments for treating aging skin for decades. Mesotherapy is well known to effectively treat cellulite for a smoother, firmer appearance to the skin on the body. Recently, it is gaining speed as a treatment used to rejuvenate lackluster, sagging skin on the face, neck and hands. The treatment includes multiple injections just under the skin (meso layer) with one of a variety of special formulations consisting of vitamins, minerals, vital amino acids, natural extracts, nucleic acids, and coenzymes. These injections rejuvenate the cells and create activity, which in turn, stimulate the production of the body's own collagen and elastin.

Results are generally seen after the first treatment, but most medical professionals will recommend treatments repeated every second week for 10 weeks, followed by a consistent maintenance program. This treatment is not for the faint of heart. Each treatment will run between $200- $400 per treatment. It is not FDA approved.

Economy Down - Demand for Plastic Surgery High

The economy may be sagging, but that is not the case for those seeking a little help to remain youthful. Approximately 10 million plastic surgeries were performed in the United States during 2009. 46% of these patients were between the ages of 35 - 50 (5.4 million). Those between the ages of 19 - 34 had 21% of the procedures, age 51 - 64 had 25%, age 65 and older 6%, and age 18 and younger had less than 2%. Men have stepped into the plastic surgery arena and are responsible for 900,000 procedures in '09, showing an 8% increase over 2008. Neck tightening procedures are increasing in popularity for both genders with 70% women and 30% men (used to be 99% women). Facelifts have also seen a surge in popularity, 94,294 procedures, with results lasting for a period of six to eight years.

The top 5 procedures were:
Breast Augmentations - 311,957 procedures
Liposuction - 283,735 procedures
Eyelid Surgery - 149,943 procedures
Rhinoplasty - 138,258 procedures
Adominoplasty - 127,923 procedures

Dry Lips

Why is it that the more you lick your lips, the drier they get? The answer is simple. Saliva contains digestive enzymes which will wreak havoc on the natural protective coating of your lips. The more you lick, the drier and more uncomfortable your lips will become. The skin on your lips is very thin and has no oil glands to help protect them from the environment.

Drink lots of water, use a humidifier at home, apply a waterproof lip balm that contains natural beeswax, shea butter, vitamin E (break open a capsule and apply to your lips), almond, jojoba, or coconut oils. Petroleum jelly works well, but it is a bit messy. Chapped lips, or those nasty little sores at the corners of your mouth, may indicate a deficiency in B-complex and/or iron.

Take care of your lips, . . . after all, they frame each and every word you say.

Fall and Winter Skin Care

Ah, . . . winter. Colder temperatures, cooler air, and depending on where you live, the possibility of rain and/or snow. When this happens we turn on our furnaces, start to use the heaters in our cars, and cover up for warmth. All of these things greatly affect our skin. The cooler temperatures cause a drop in the humidity leading to increased moisture loss, and the dry warmth of the furnace pitches in to finish off the job by robbing your skin's moisture levels. Did you know that sitting in your car with the heater blowing may feel warm and toasty, but it puts your skin into panic mode?

It is normal to have moisture move through your skin and evaporate from the skin's surface to some degree, but when the skin loses too much moisture it responds with defensive actions. For instance, oil production increases in an attempt to trap more moisture as it plays a large role in holding, or linking, moisture in the skin. The surface layer of the skin begins to thicken in an attempt to lessen the moisture loss. The result? A thicker, duller complexion with more dehydration lines, accentuated existing lines, and a definite feeling of tightness. If that is not bad enough, dehydrated skin is more susceptible to free radical damage accelerating the aging process.

During the fall and winter months it is paramount to switch up to a new day cream that will provide a little more emolliency and protection, and one that will boost hydration, . . . big time. If you cannot bring yourself to change your day cream, boost it with a serum day and night. Exfoliation will help address the thickening, minimize the lines and pore depth, increase the healthy color of the skin, and give a renewed look of vitality. Bring out the hydrating masks, daily if you need to, and don't forget to go and have a professional deep hydrating facial. Your skin will radiate with appreciation.

Yoga - The Yin and Yang of Beauty

Yoga offers so many benefits it is no wonder it is sweeping the globe. It balances the body's system, improves vitality, relieves stress and tension, brings more oxygen to the body, controls hormone levels, increases sluggish digestion, flushes out toxins, offers a new level of mental alertness, and improves circulation leading to the reduction in wrinkle formation and producing a natural face lift. Long story short . . . yoga offers a healthy, more youthful way of living.

This is the perfect time of year to incorporate 20 minutes of yoga into each day. Why now? November and December are the busiest times of the year when we have the least amount of energy to burn. Unfortunately, the physical math does not work. Winter is considered the 'yin' season, one that is cool, wet, slow, feminine, and quiet. Summer, on the other hand, is the 'yang' season and is the exact opposite with warm, dry, fast, masculine, and 'anything but quiet' energy.

Winter should be dedicated to storing energy. The winter solstice, three or four days before Christmas, are supposed to be the quietest days of the year, but instead we burn the candle at both ends while taking part in 'yang' activities. We are clearly at odds with our nature adding a great deal of stress to our lives. Stress turns itself outward by accelerating the aging process and causing illnesses.

Yoga has the ability to correct the problem, and in doing so, create a more youthful and harmonious balance. It is said, "if you want to change your appearance, you must first change your thoughts, emotions, and habits where stress and aging originate." A stressed out body and mind will project the same in our appearances. Conversely, if we nourish ourselves by adopting a healthy lifestyle, we will age ever so gracefully. So, what are you waiting for? O-m-m-m-m-m . . .

Alpha Hydroxy Acid Health Review

Does the use of Alpha Hydroxy Acids increase the risk of skin cancer?
There has been a fair amount of buzz, and perhaps a little bit of negative press, regarding AHAs and cancer. To date, no studies have found a credible correlation between products that contain Alpha Hydroxy Acid and cancer. There is, however, the distinct warning that Alpha Hydroxy Acids may make the skin more sensitive to the sun, and everyone knows that too much unprotected exposure to the sun has the potential to cause skin cancer. A word of caution, however. High concentrations of glycolic acid are being sold on the internet in home exfoliation/peel DIY kits. If the concentration is too high, or the product is improperly used, there is a very real possibility of burning the skin which could result in permanent damage. As always, do your homework. Leave this type of skin care in the safe hands of your estheticians and/or dermatologists. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Happy Halloween - The Power of Pumpkin

Halloween is a perfect time of year to take a closer look at the pumpkin's contribution to the skin care industry. Many interesting specialized products are based upon this beautiful superfood. Other than the natural fruit acids (yes, the pumpkin is technically a fruit), it is high in Vitamins A, C, & E, several B's, potassium, magnesium iron, zinc and copper. Quite the list! In fact, some have said that, "the pumpkin contains one of the richest supplies of bioavailable carotenoids known to man."

In skin care, however, the pumpkin has a unique ability to efficiently exfoliate dead skin cells while cleansing, detoxing and promoting a healthy healing process. It enables other ingredients to penetrate the skin more effectively, works on restoring the elasticity of the skin and offers moisturizing properties that leave the skin feeling silky smooth. Pumpkin skin care is most effective for dull, sluggish skin that screams for nutrition and the return of a long lost radiant glow. There are many great pumpkin products on the market that deserve your attention. It is clear that pumpkins offer so much more than just baking into great pies. Pumpkin power, indeed.

Happy Thanksgiving Canada!

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. ~John Fitzgerald Kennedy

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow. ~Melody Beattie

New Spa Trends as Reported by ISPA

The International SPA Association (ISPA) recently hosted the 16th annual ISPA Media Event in New York City. The ISPA Media Event works to promote the spa industry, discuss the latest trends and release new ISPA research while the participating spas perform innovative and unique treatments on the media. New treatments were introduced along with several trends at the event including:
• Ancient treatments with a modern twist - Miraval Arizona in Tucson, AZ, took the ancient Chinese treatment of acupuncture and combined it with cranio sacral therapy to introduce the Qi Grounding treatment. The treatment helps clear physical restrictions that hold emotional and energetic imbalances. Rancho La Puerta located in Tecate, Mexico performed a Hydrating Hand Treatment which utilized the pressure point chart of the hand. Releasing pressure points assists in increased circulation and relaxation.
• Bring the outside in - Elements of nature were popular in several treatments featured at the event. Aspira The Spa located in Elkhart Lake, WI, incorporated wild chamomile, an herb indigenous to the area, in a mask used to help relieve tired legs and feet. Lake Austin Spa in Austin, TX, used recycled bamboo trunks crafted especially for their Warm Bamboo Massage.
• Customization - Spas are catering to their guests' every need. The Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa located in Asheville, NC, showcased a treatment that allows you to choose from a mountain-, water-, sky- or heaven-themed offering, all designed to help melt muscle tension and reduce stress. The Montage Resort and Spa located in Laguna Beach, CA, introduced a new series of seasonal, organic body wraps for winter, spring, summer and fall. After determining which season is best suited to you a personalized hand treatment helps you relax. The Spa at Trump in New York City tailors every treatment while stimulating each of the five senses with their personal Intention Journey. Clients select everything from the music to the tea service.
• Giving back - The spa industry is known for its healing benefits and generous spirit. Mandarin Oriental Spas in New York, Boston, Washington D.C., Miami, Las Vegas and Bermuda are giving back during October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month with the Spa for a Year program. Purchase a raffle token, the proceeds of which go to Evelyn Lauder’s Breast Cancer Research Foundation, and at the end of the month, one person in each city will receive a signature spa treatment every month for a year.
• Insight through dreams - The Lodge at Woodloch in Hawley, PA, introduced a new program focused on dreams. Through Shamanic Dreamwork sessions with a Dream Coach clients are able to gain insight into their life purposes, healing, creativity, relationships and more.
• Soothing soreness - Suffering from stiffness or aching feet is totally uncalled for when the spa can help set you straight. Kohler Waters Spa located in Kohler, WI, provided a Stretch and Flex treatment utilizing Thai massage, orthopedic and myofascial techniques to help alleviate pain, improve flexibility and the health of muscles, tendons and ligaments. Mohonk Mountain House located in New Paltz, NY, helped to bring a spring back into the media’s step with The High Heeler and Man on the Go: Real Relief for Calves and Feet treatment. Using integrated massage techniques the treatment helps refresh your tired legs and feet.
• Take your vitamins - Massage Envy Spas located throughout the United States introduced a Healthy Skin Vitamin C Infusion Facial that utilizes Murad products. The facial helps repair and prevent free radical damage caused by environmental exposure.

Spa Travel Sector . . . Healthy and Well

SpaFinder conducted their fourth annual State of Spa Travel Survey in an effort to understand how the spa travel sector is doing, particularly in light of the sluggish economy. The results show that the spa industry has "performed surprisingly well despite a depressed economy in 2009, and is clocking measurable, if modest, growth for the first half of 2010."

SpaFinder also dubbed 2009 ‘The Year of the Deal' since most resorts and spas invested a great deal of marketing expertise to create lower pricing and special deals for their buying public. Travel agents noted that this significant trend became the #1 change in spa client's buying patterns followed by booking shorter vacations that were perhaps closer to home.

Floating Spa Pool - Flosaldrome Floatarium

Flosaldrome is a new floating spa pool featuring a spacious floatarium with a 3-meter (9.8ft) round pool that gives a unique sensation of weightlessness and the feeling of freedom from time and space. The user of the round floatarium pool is suspended in a non-irritant saline solution (30 percent saline) that is heated to between 35 and 36 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit). A color spectrum with visual inspiration and a state-of-the-art acoustic system offers the user the optimum experience in deep relaxation by isolating the distractions of outside surroundings.

Professor John C. Lilly investigated the effect of floating on the human body in a five year study. The scientific method of REST (restricted environment stimulation technique) produces a very deep relaxation by isolating distractions of outside surroundings. Using the Flosaldrome can result in health benefits such as stress management and increased stress tolerance, blood pressure regulation, rheumatic and arthritic discomfort alleviation, pain relief in areas such as back pain and muscle and joint discomfort, and a possible reduction of addictive behavior. Weightless wonder? Wonderful.

June Jacobs Perfect Pumpkin Peeling Enzyme Masque

This masque offers the exfoliant enzymatic action of pumpkin along with other pumpkin extracts to rebalance the skin’s hydrolipidic barrier. This is essential because as incredible as pumpkin enzymes are, they can be a little too much for delicate or sensitive prone skin. Remember, if you irritate or inflame your skin, you are causing free radical damage . . . stronger, longer, and more aggressive is not always better.

Vitamin C, pomegranate, and extracts of white and green tea are incorporated into the formula to ensure great antioxidant properties needed for healthy skin. Antioxidants need to be continually "restocked" for the skin to defend itself from the never ending onslaught of free radicals. Whether the pumpkin enzyme is left on the skin too long, or the free radicals are triggered by other actions, an immediate source of antioxidants is very beneficial. The quicker free radicals are neutralized, the less damage they cause. Other beneficial ingredients found are Zinc for its great healing properties, and Vitamin C for collageneisis (production of collagen). Although the absorption may be debatable, all sources are helpful. The Vitamin A in this product is not Retinol, but an ester of it. It will not have the potent effects of retinol, which can be irritating to some, but it will offer incredible emolliency to the skin. All in all, this masque a nice way to reawaken your skin.

Pevonia Enzymo-Spherides Peeling Cream

Is your skin looking duller, fine lines becoming more apparent, and pores more noticeable? This is a result of the corneal layer (top layer of the epidermis) thickening in a defense to continual UV exposure during the summer months. These are also signs that indicate an exfoliation intervention is needed to renew and refine your skin.

If your skin cannot tolerate mechanical types of exfoliants (those that require rubbing over the skin with or without granules), and you are looking for a product that will have a resurfacing effect on your skin, this enzyme peeling cream may be a solution. It offers different antihyperkerative enzymes, including papain from papaya and bromeline from pineapple. Both enzymes are encapsulated in microspheres to control their effectiveness, both work to break down excess keratinized cells, and both will refine the texture and thickness of the skin. This product also contains a small amount of citric acid, an AHA that works well in the corneal layer of the epidermis without the irritation caused by some AHA’s. The plant extracts offer the anti-inflammatory soothing actions of chamomile, saponaria and arnica, along with the anti-oxidant and regenerating properties of ginkgo biloba and horse chestnut, ensuring not only a nice enzyme exfoliation but one with minimal, if any, irritation.

Innovative Skin Care - Youth Eye Complex

The brightness of the sun during the summer and the tendency for the epidermis to thicken in defense usually results in more visible lines in the eye area. This eye product is a gem, loaded with hyaluronic acid in different forms to ensure immediate and delayed hydration as well as peptides, copper, centella asiatica and vitamins needed to trigger collagen synthesis. Centella asiatica not only promotes collagen synthesis, it will protect the skin from collagen degeneration.

The ester of vitamin A ensures it will not irritate the delicate skin of the eye area, but will leave the area smooth and emollient. Vitamin C and E are both powerful antioxidants, and when found together are 50 times more effective. This protects the elastin and collagen, as well as the other structures in the skin. Vitamin B5, needed for the health of every skin cell, also helps to ensure the revitalization of the delicate skin of the eye area. This eye product is definitely one to try, but remember to apply only along the bone of the orbit and not on the delicate skin of the eye lids. Enjoy!

Fall for Seasonal Skin Care

Fall is just around the corner. My, oh my, how time flies. Colder temperatures, cooler air, and depending on where you live, the possibility of rain and/or snow looms around the corner. Furnaces are turned on in our homes, heaters in our cars, and we all cover up for warmth. All of these things greatly affect our skin. The cooler temperatures cause a drop in the humidity leading to increased moisture loss, and the dry warmth of the furnace pitches in to finish off the job by robbing your skin's moisture levels. Sitting in a car with the heater blowing may feel warm and toasty, but it your skin into panic mode.

Do your skin a favor. Pay attention to your skin care and "switch it up" to products that will offer the best protection for the colder weather.
